Article #800 - IEEE
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standards Association (IEEE-SA) and IEEE societies have numerous committees working on grid modernization topics. As GridWise™ concepts and efforts progress, the significance of various technical committees and working groups will evolve. Because there is no architectural or integrative approach in IEEE groups, it is not obvious which particular group would be key for initial needs of the GridWise Architecture Board, although several specific efforts will be of great interest to GridWise (for example, SCC21 P1547).
GridWise architecture would benefit from additional information on current undertakings of SCC36 (and in general, a more accurate picture of GridWise-related efforts in IEEE), this information is not readily obtainable to non-members of committees.
This snapshot underlines the compartmentalization of GridWise-related efforts in the IEEE and the lack of any overarching, guiding mechanism between these numerous efforts.

The website contains IEEE standards for various technical fields including power and energy area. The parent organization, IEEE is an International trade body-including IEEE-SA and IEEE-ISTO and IEEE Societies. Some IEEE "Societies" have technical activities groups which develop standards, at some point this standards development is transferred to IEEE-SA. IEEE Councils regroup several IEEE societies. Societies relevant to GridWise include: IEEE Communications Society, IEEE Computer Society, IEEE Consumer Electronics Society, IEEE Control Systems Society, IEEE Power Electronics Society, IEEE Power Engineering Society. It may be in the interest of GridWise to aim to create an IEEE GridWise Council, regrouping the various IEEE Societies touching on GridWise. The IEEE-ISTO is a sort of prepackaged consortia home-base for initiatives and standards-making which doesn't follow the classic IEEE track. |
